Avelino Sala is participating in Under the Same Flag, a group exhibition at Borderline Art Space in Iași, Romania, running from 1 to 30 October 2026. Curated by Alec Bălășescu, the exhibition marks the second chapter of the project In the Shadow of the Flag: Dialogues for Democracy, which explores how national symbols, identity imaginaries and new forms of populism are reshaping the contemporary public sphere.
The exhibition brings together Daniel Andújar, Matei Bejenaru, Florin Bobu, James Clar, Chus García-Fraile, Ferenc Gróf, Igor Grubić, Andreea Ilie, Pravdoljub Ivanov, Radu Jude, Cezar Lăzărescu, Glenda León, Ciprian Mureșan, Harcea Pacea, Dan Perjovschi, Ghenadie Popescu, Nicolae Romanitan, George Roșu, Avelino Sala, Michael Schäfer, Sasho Stoitzov, Mona Vătămanu and Florin Tudor.
Through works exploring flags and other symbols of belonging, the exhibition examines the political and emotional meanings of national identity, while questioning the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion that these symbols can generate. The project invites visitors to reflect on the construction of collective identities and on how the human need for belonging can be addressed without resorting to opposition, exclusion or rhetoric that seeks to eliminate the other.
Organised by Borderline Art Space and the AltIași Cultural Association, the project promotes dialogue and critical reflection on democracy and contemporary forms of collective belonging.
