From nothing to void: Pep Vidal

Overview

We understand that void is a space where all the present matter (air and other particles) is eliminated. Nevertheless, the difference between nothing and void is (almost) infinite.

The words void and nothing are commonly referred to a similar concept: a lack of content in a space. When we are referring to a space with nothing, an empty space, we use the word void. At the same time, we understand that void is a space where all the present matter (air and other particles) is eliminated. Nevertheless, the difference between nothing and void is (almost) infinite. In his project {}, (Espai Cub, La Capella, 2013), Pep Vidal isolated nothingness. Erasing the air molecules, he produced an ultra vacuum capsule, limiting as much as possible the internal chances of interaction.

A real void, constant over time, the best void that could be achieved in a scientific facility. In From Nothing to Void (2014), Pep Vidal is focused on the development process of the project, with the aim of deepening in what lies between a void and the void, and points out that the complexity between these concepts remains in this space.

The artist manages to introduce us to the invisible dimension of the particles that make up matter, emphasizing that infinitesimal changes are the systems creation’ basis (spaces where any kind of interaction is produced). To do so, Vidal designs and builds five capsules, apparently equal but radically different, each one with a different degree of emptiness.
