The Museo Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (MUCAC) inaugurated the exhibition Mediterráneo: continente sin tierra (Mediterranean: A Continent Without Land) this Friday at its La Coracha venue. The exhibition brings together almost one hundred works by 20 artists who reflect on the connections and tensions that run through this region.

The exhibition features nearly one hundred works spanning painting, sculpture, photography, collage, textiles, video art, installation and sound art, forming a plural cultural map that encompasses territories such as Greece, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, Morocco, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, among others.

Mediterráneo: continente sin tierra is distinctive in that it has been curated collectively by all the participating artists, with coordination by Marisa Maza and Moira Zoitl. Together with Juan Carlos Robles, they are developing the first stage of a long-term artistic research project at MUCAC Málaga, in collaboration with the Communicare working group at nGbK Berlin.

The works address issues that connect bodies and landscapes with ecological processes, technologies and political contexts.

The exhibition route is structured around the five classical elements — earth, water, air, fire and ether — conceived as ways of approaching materiality, fluidity, bodily perception, transformation and the connections between different realities.

"Beyond presenting the artworks, the project proposes the museum as a space for dialogue, international cooperation and the production of artistic knowledge, with the aim of fostering new forms of collaboration between territories," the museum stated.

The exhibition brings together ten Spanish artists and ten artists from different Mediterranean territories, namely: Carlos Aires, Heba Y. Amin, Forensic Architecture, Pablo Genovés, Robert Gschwanter, Spiros Hadjidjanos and Nezaket Ikici.

Also participating are Seif Kousmate, Damian Le Bas, Mar Martín, Marisa Maza, Sonia Navarro, Valentina Piredda-Sardinia, Esther Pizarro, Florencia Rojas, Juan Carlos Robles, Adnan & Nina Softic, Huda Takriti, Guillermo Pérez Villalta and Moira Zoitl.

The exhibition, which falls within two of the three strategic areas of MUCAC's museum plan, will remain open to the public until 7 March, with free admission.
