From 11 September to 24 January, Matadero Madrid’s Nave 0 will host the site-specific exhibition Bailad, bailad, malditos by artist Carlos Aires, as part of the ‘Abierto x Obras’ programme. Curated by Jose Luis Romo, the artist will invite the public to step onto a dance floor within a propped-up space, an installation that functions as a sculptural ensemble and invites viewers to move through emotions such as euphoria and unease.
The exhibition features more than one hundred props and around twenty screens in Nave 0, the former cold-storage chamber of the municipal slaughterhouse. The visible scars of this space, charred in a fire many years ago, together with the memory of its violence, provided the artist with the starting point for his installation Bailad, bailad, malditos.
The artist invites viewers to step onto a dance floor within a propped-up space that endures. Ruin, darkness and euphoria merge in a sensory work that draws visitors into a metal forest inhabited by mysterious figures who accompany them through its unsettling soundscape. Dance and unease, night and euphoria come together in this work, which marks his first solo exhibition at a public institution in Madrid.
