More information
This series of drawings with magnetized iron filings on paper brings together a collection of isolated buildings next to cypress trees. Some of these buildings are derived from engravings by Piranesi, while others represent residences where essential artists and thinkers were born, lived, or died, influencing Daubanes' artistic practice. The presence of the cypress refers to a characteristic of southern France that dates back to the time when Protestants were excluded from common cemeteries. Forced to bury their deceased relatives in their own gardens and based on the popular belief that this elongated tree helps souls to ascend, the Protestant population initiated the tradition of planting cypresses in private homes.
