From 1919 to 1920, the Russian artist Vladimir Tatlin worked intensively on his most important project, the Monument to the Third International. It was to be a gigantic sculpture of nearly four hundred meters: a habitable building and an epic monument to world revolution. The project never progressed beyond the model stage and, in fact, it was highly unlikely that it could be built. However, the model has become an icon of the avant-garde, a paradigm of utopia, and the symbol of the perpetually unfinished revolution. "Playground (Tatlin in Mexico)" is a replica of the Tatlin tower made with the materials, measurements, and colors commonly used in Mexican playgrounds. The great monument to the revolution never built thus becomes simple urban furniture, a game for children. The replica was temporarily installed in the gardens of Parque España in the Condesa neighborhood, an area of upper-middle class, very close to the monument to General Cárdenas, a revolutionary military leader, politician, and president of the country between 1934 and 1940. Later, it was moved and permanently installed at the Faro de Oriente cultural center in Iztapalapa, on the impoverished outskirts of Mexico City.
