Every year, more than 30,000 day labourers arrive in Lleida (from distant regions of Africa or as illegal immigrants) to pick the sweet fruit that Spain will consume and export over the following months. It is bitter, hard work, as in addition to exhausting working days and low wages, the labourers must live with and endure the racism that surrounds them in the villages where they go to pick fruit. Racism is so strong that workers often face the reality of not being able to rent places to spend the night after their long days in the fields, shelters are overwhelmed, and many labourers have to sleep on the streets. We built a plexiglass bed filled with the fruit harvested by the labourers. We placed the bed in a public space, and I spent the night sleeping in it.
