Off whoring. An Essay on Masculinity is a project that gathers a series of conversations between the artist and a group of women who practice prostitution in León and Girona. Women explain their own experiences with men by revealing aspects of masculinity that no one else sees. In this way, the main content of the work is not focused on the portrayals of prostitutes, but on that of the men who demand their services. Therefore, the prostitute becomes the author and the man the character. A character that is built on the basis of his own experiences, who confronts the archetype of the ‘macho’ traditionally assigned to heterosexual men.
Thus, women comment on how their clients come to them seeking a safe space in their lives, making the encounter a kind of psychological consultation.In short, the video points to the lack of references needed to rethink masculinity in terms of cultural production and critical theory. A lack of references that deems urgent when reviewing a history of art that is full of female body representations. In this piece, the artist makes a critical review of the use of the female body in art history to comment on the crisis of masculinity.
